Things I learned from Cooking

in #life5 years ago

Who would have thought that a simple activity like cooking teaches me skills I need to grow as a person? No pun intended but having to learn how to cook for the past week, there are important lesson I pick up from doing this activity.

Cooking teaches us how to follow orders and patience

There are methods in every recipes. It is a must to do it sequentially, otherwise a missing step will ruin the recipe and the food. Cooking is also perfectly timed. For instance, to cook a perfect soft boiled egg, you will need 5 minutes without opening the lid. Sometimes you have to wait even 3 hours just to get the meal ready. This will make you appreciate the food you eat and teach you, good things take time.

It teaches us precision and perfection

One of useful thing I picked up from cooking is precision. It is an important skill that you need in life if you want to excel in something. In cooking, you can not just chop ingredients randomly, there is method to do so. For instance, take a look at this video on " how to chop onion by Jamie Oliver"

Not only that, the precision on how much sugar, salt of things you add into the meal will teach you that it's important to be precise. Too much of things will definitely ruin the taste of your meal. It goes the same with life, too much of things might be harmful as well. Everything has to be at least precise and near to perfection.

It sharpens your creativity and senses

Visual is one of important aspect in cooking. There is a certain satisfaction if you can serve your food in a beautiful plate. When you're cooking you will use your smell, taste, and even feelings. If you don't put your feelings into your food, it will certainly affects how it tastes. Take a look at two of meals below, which one would you eat in terms of visual?I am sure many of us would eat the second one, a nicely decorated burrito.

I know the comparison is a little bit off. But you know, the octopus seller could have put something on display instead showcasing like that.

It teaches you perseverance

Sometimes even you follow the correct orders and measurements, it can fail. Then, we're left thinking, what is wrong with the recipe? so we take time to find out the missing ingredients or even the proper measurement. We just don't quit when the food tastes bad. That's how we should approach life too. If you're failing, don't give up. Find what's missing / wrong. correct it and try again.

Anyway, that's me philosophizing cooking. I think simple things we do often teach us something we need in our life. Take a moment to observe yourself while cooking, you will notice several of those things above. Most importantly, don't forget to enjoy the process of making a meal! Don't think too much like I do, Cheers!
