The English firm "Sir Armstrong, witworth and Co." quickly and accurately coped with the task. The contract for the construction of this icebreaker was successfully executed and in September 1917 the ship was included in the fleet of the Arctic ocean. Port of registry - Arkhangelsk.

The events that took place in 1918 became tragic for the icebreaker. The fact is that when foreign ships approached Arkhangelsk, the task was to block the way of Intervention ships so that they could not enter the city. For this purpose, it was decided to drown the icebreaker "Svyatogor". (this was the first name since it was launched)

The ship was drowned and only its pipes were visible above the water. But all this was in vain. British troops still were able to get in Arkhangelsk and in a few days they raised the icebreaker from the bottom of the Northern Dvina. Since 1920, the ship began to walk under the English flag.

In the autumn of 1919, the Russian steamship, which carried a lot of food, got stuck in the ice and was pushed out by ice in the Kara sea. Then the Bolsheviks appealed to the British government to use the powerful icebreaker "Svyatogor" to save 85 people who were without the necessary help for four months. As a result, people were saved, and the icebreaker returned to England, where he stayed for another 2 years.

Negotiations on the return of the icebreaker back to Russia were held for a very long period. The diplomat Leonid Krasin managed to achieve a positive result. The icebreaker returned to Russia. In 1927 he was given a new name - icebreaker Krasin. Under this name he made some more feats and became famous all over the world.

This vessel operated as a powerful icebreaker until 1970. It visited various Arctic expeditions, including the rescue of the Humberto Nobile Arctic expedition and the support of allied convoys during world war II, the passage of the Northern route to America and 885-day circumnavigation.

And now, with the 1980's, he is constantly in the Parking lot at the Lieutenant Schmidt embankment in Saint-Petersburg. His role today is a Museum.

Thanks for supporting me, @sharminkona

Who'd a thought a ship could have such a rich history! Salvaging a boat from the water is quite a feat! Thanks for the intriguing history.

@lexikon082, I'm glad You were interested :). In fact, for 70 years of his career there were many interesting stories. Now there is a Museum and you can hear a lot of interesting facts.Maybe I'll come back to this story, just with pictures of what's inside that icebreaker . Thank you for looking.

You are welcome. Would definitely welcome pics of the inside

"Svyatogor" sounds better then "Krasin"( my opinion)))

You are right, Svyatogor and Ermak were the largest ships of the Russian Empire. That sounds a lot better. But Leonid Krasin's merit is really great. He died in 1926, and a year later the icebreaker was given his name - Krasin. I think it's worthy

Wonderful photos. What a beautiful icebreaker.
