My kids love free stuff. They get a piece of free fruit at the grocery store, Costco spoils them with their abundance of samples, Trader joe's gives them an orange and a lollipop, there is a candy jar when we go pay rent, plenty of restaurants have kids eat free there, the dentist gives you a goody bag when you leave, and the fast food restaurants still give toys.

Really, there's lots of free stuff still. But you're right about the jobs - overtime or double income households is the norm.
