WOLVERINE. Take a Break. Improve a Skill. Share With EVERYONE! [ORIGINAL ART]

Using the app, Sketch, I've been able to relieve some of the boredom and monotony of school report writing. What better character to recreate and share on Steemit than Wolverine?

It's been a while since I've drawn Wolvie.

Actually, I think it's been at least fifteen years! Isn't that insane? I'm so used to seeing and drawing super heroes with their masks on. Every time I drew Spider-Man it was with his mask on. Because who cares about Peter Parker?

Todd McFarlane is my artistic inspiration.

I'm currently reviewing his entry into Amazing Spider-Man #298 which springboarded McFarlane into stardom. Knowing he's drawn the Hulk, Spider-Man, Batman and Wolverine (among others), there were so many options to gain inspiration from. Wolverine proved an interesting choice because he is mask-less, yet still interesting. I've also experienced Old Man Logan through recent issues such as #37 which makes the whole experience very fresh in my mind.

Explaining the lines and squiggles.

I began outlining the face on the right side (his left) as a starting point. You'll notice from this image to the next, his nose position has changed. Clearly, adjustments needed to be made. Wolverine's face is slightly angled to the right, yet his nose was centred and it just looked off.

I added his neck and parts of his left shoulder to fill the space. You'll also notice that I've added some cross-hatched line detail to where I'll also be adding some shading. The sketch is ready for colour application.

Selecting an appropriate colour tone and thinking of highlights here. Obviously Wolverine's Canadian background meant that he's likely a white dude. Changing the skin tone would be cool, but I'd also have to adjust a few other facial features, such as slightly broadening the nose and altering the hair.

Final coloured drawing.

I added steely eyes, giving them reflective properties (a white dot or two), skin highlights around the cheeks, nose and brow and coloured the hair.

I used three tones of brown to give Logan's hair greater depth and interest. Shadows play off locks of hair and it just looks lustrous!

Logan's mouth is an interesting space. Because the entire drawing was done using my finger (not a stylus!) on my nine-month-old Galaxy S8, I wasn't able to catch super fine detail.

More often than not, the less lines that outline individual teeth, the better. I think the few lines I chose worked okay in this instance. I added a tiny fleshy splash of colour beneath Logan's bottom teeth to note the visibility of his gums.

Sign it and show it off.

It's here. Warts and all. Like I mentioned in my Vanellope Von Schweetz drawing post which was pretty awful, I'll admit, it's important to just do AND share the things in life that give you joy and fulfillment.

I also mentioned that you probably wouldn't see another drawing. Shit. Wasn't I wrong?!

If you've read all the tripe 'til the end, you're a saint.

Shout-out to a few real life divine water colour artists. I have been really enjoying their colour choices and flair. It's high quality Steemians like these three in particular, that make this social media platform valuable.

I’m still looking for an artist to cover my work on my fantasy saga, Adventures in Elowyn Glade.

Wow love the technique of the abstraction.

I'm not sure what that means.. but thanks for the compliment!

Cheers.

Interesting technique, I have seen before this type of drawings that are made lines, whether the shading, depth of the drawing or delimit some area like the eyes. I like the tones you used and it really is a good drawing. I like how you explained each step. Excellent post, greetings.

Nick, I've been off Steemit for about a week or two so I'm just seeing this now! Thank you so much for the shout-out! I really appreciate it! Nice drawing! I love the expression in his face, and how you echo it with your gestural lines. Cheers!

No worries, Caity!

Don't be a stranger. This place isn't the same without you here! Sometimes, it is good to have time off, but seeing even small contributions brighten up my feed.

Take care and keep on producing your wonderful work.
