Prisoners :: free labor

Peace steemians,

Today, I read an article that was about a sad situation occuring in prison.

Inmates in prison system have assign work to do such as cook, clean and handling the maintenance.
Most of the time such daily works are completed freely by the inmates.

In the United State of America it happens that certains State laws do allow payment of inmates work but others States do not. In fact 5 States are not allowing such payment.

In case of natural desasters, the States can use the inmates to clean up storm debris.

If the prison system successfully organize the inmates labor to be paid, the rate of recidivism can hyghly decrease. In such case the inmates who spend many years behind bars, once free can go back to his home with an education and couple of dollars to build a new really for themselves.

The family is also put under more charges if they have to provide a supplement amount of money for the inmate commodity.

However the free labors system occuring in prison is showing failure in the rehabilitation of the released inmate. It is a system that set people in prison for failure so they keep on coming back.

When the inmates demand to be paid by the department of corrections for their work, do you think it is not right?
