Did ‘Gotti’ Fake Its Positive Rotten Tomatoes Reviews?

in #life6 years ago

The world of cinema loves a good bad movie train wreck, and boy did they get one in the form of ‘Gotti’. Directed by an actor from Entourage (Kevin Connolly also known as “E”), the movie, which sees John Travolta slathered in the greatest Frankenstein monster make-up this free country has to offer, got a delicious, slimy goose egg from Rotten Tomatoes. That’s right. Just as movies like ‘Lady Bird’ and ‘Toy Story 2’ sported perfect 100% reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Gotti is giving us a nice, delicious, tasty zero. However, at the heart of that zero is a riddle; a question. For sitting next to it is an audience score and it is… 79%?

Gotti used this difference between numbers as part of its new populist (some would say Trump-like) advertising campaign, where it implied the critics don’t want you to see this movie, but the people love it.

Audiences loved Gotti but critics don’t want you to see it… The question is why??? Trust the people and see it for yourself!

Which is… well, not completely true. When Reddit and Birth.Movies.Death began looking into these numbers, they began to notice odd trends. Most of the users who left positive reviews left them only for Gotti, or for Gotti and ‘American Animals’, another movie produced by MoviePass, which, apparently, along with a business model that doesn’t make a ton of sense, leaves movie reviews that don’t make a ton of sense.

This is also combined with an odd matter. Gotti received around 7,000 user reviews after only being screened on 500 screens, while Disney/Pixar’s ‘The Incredibles 2′, a film whose popularity is so obvious, received 7,500 user reviews after premiering on, according to Paste, 105% more screens. Whoops!

Could it be that someone behind Gotti is creating fake accounts to leave positive reviews? I don’t know.

So, maybe it’s not the people who want you to see Gotti, maybe it’s the people who want to make money off of Gotti (which is a very mobster-y thing to do). Maybe this ad campaign is absolutely perfect.

Hey. Go see Gotti. We mighty trick you into it!

But, listen. Use that same makeup, and just give me a good ol’ John Travolta as Frankenstein film already. There we go! Part and character, perfectly combined. And, yeah. I meant Frankenstein’s monster. The first person to correct me has to go see Gotti with me… AND YOU’RE BUYING THE POPCORN.
