How Insecurity Impacts on School Attendance and School Dropout

I have no idea how fast rumors spread until I stepped out of the bubble and started to interact with people I used to hardly talk to at school.

Reasons for Dropping Out of School

Factors that contribute to high insecurity levels in these slum areas include low presence of law enforcement agents, and high levels of unemployment among youth leading to idleness, drug and alcohol abuse and crime. For example, in the ERP data percent of students in slum schools admitted to ever having sold drugs, whilst only.percent of non slum children admitted to this. However a high number of children in both slum and non-slum schools said that there was a drug and alcohol problem at their school, with percent in slum schools and percent in non-slum schools admitting this. Although most studies of insecurity in Nairobi have focused on how insecurity negatively affects the economy by pushing tourists and investors away, our main focus will be to look at how this insecurity impacts on education and educational attainment among slum children .

Violence and Family Breakdown

Theoretically, the family is a source of security for all members who belong to that family unit. It is the site of social reproduction as children are born and are socialized within the family. the family provides the individual with a safety net and a buffer against outside pressures. the family provides the individual with a sense of security. When the family for any reason stops functioning then the individuals who belong to that particular family unit become generally insecure. One of the common factors that helped to explain why some children from poor families ended up dropping out of school was family breakdown or violence within the family. In some cases of violence within the home, especially in cases where the parents thought all the time, some children might prefer to stay at home to monitor the situation and protect one parent from the other parent.

conclusion

this post has discussed how general security concerns can impact on school attendance. the focus was on how people’s understandings and interpretations of events and occurrences, as well as narratives of risk, can impact on their actions. It is also interesting to note the role of embodied history and community repertoires in influencing people’s decisions on whether to withdraw from school or not. the perception of insecurity may more often than not influence how people act and behave regardless of whether the perceived threat is real or not. “Although perceptions of insecurity are not always borne out by statistical evidence, they fundamentally affect well-being”

Beautiful .. Interesting
Great participation from you, I hope we find a more effective way
Thanks for sharing

But remember that someday you’ll be able to carve yourself, and you’re the one who can choose if you want to be a piece of art or a useless piece of wood.

Wow, this is so true, i wish most people knew this.
The problem with school is creating alot of white sheep who need a leader to follow instead of being leaders themselves.
Here in africa it's even worse, most graduates appear the most incompetent even when they have degrees, after mastering the art of cramming theories into their heads, that's all they can think of in their entire lives. This even forces some to go for master degrees because the real world is kinda unrealistic to them.
Personally i think school has killed just too much potential talents in kids.
We can't say any immediate change can happen soon, the education system has been here for centuries and people are just realizing it's faults, guess too it will take sometime to make a change.
Surprisingly, nowadays the number of dropouts increases each year.

A revolutionary change is required in the education system to make this world a better place.

What do you think the revolution should be about, @writingpassion?

Revolution is a big word and I am trying to know the pieces and the puzzles that needs to be moved around to change the educational system.

I want to hear your thoughts.

Ah!

"...someday you’ll be able to carve yourself, and you’re the one who can choose if you want to be a piece of art or a useless piece of wood."

@rihadkhan, I share in your sentiment. I am not against school, but I have decided to create the 'unschooling school' in Nigeria and it does everything opposite of what the school do. Several innovations have been birthed in just a few months.

I agree with all your point, that we have to decided to choose to become a piece of art. Yet,we need people that can see the potential and help us nurture it.

As you are creating this awareness and writing about these things, I am so glad to see this and are you thinking of creating something that can change the education system that we have?

I will like to hear more about you..

Cheers.

Very true. It's very dificult to comment to your post my friend. I live in a country where it's education system is not well settled yet. After education, we will promote ourselves to your positions. Then we will worry about those problems. Haha.

School is hard work for kids and in my opinion to much.

What do need to change, @stranded?

It seems most of us know that the school is hardwork for kids, but don't you think we need to do something about it?

I think a lot of people try to do something about it and homeschool their kids. That to me seems like a good solution but one has to be able to do that.

Yes, you may need to learn about homeschooling techniques to run an effective one. Thank you for sharing your thought, @stranded

I think one of the major problems with our current public educational system is that children are educated to serve a purpose for the industry and to supply a demand from the industry. This works very well if the childs interests and hobbies coincide with the demand of the industry but goes terribly wrong when these interests differ. It is no secret that humans learn most efficiently if they choose to do so voluntarily and learn inefficiently when forced to learn something against their will.

You nailed it, @chrischez I like your point. Very valid.

Couldn't agree more on the asserting that you are the one who agrees if you are special or a peice of wood. However it's good to pick those good items in schools and add yours. Which is why the first point of call is the home. Good home tutorials is a panacea to the shortcomings.
Thanks
