What if you were told that your ability to succeed or improve the current quality of your life was based on your next move- like your exact next move after being told this? Wouldn’t you be rather careful and more deliberate of your next move; so as to not mess up your future?

Hello dear reader, good day yeah? I wish to let you know that it is not a mistake that you’re here at this particular time reading this post. I strongly believe that more than the 40% of you who would read this to the end would learn something valuable that would certainly change your perception concerning living a successful life that you would be proud of.

What do you do when no one is around?

A lot of us are yet to understand that our success in life, in a big way, depends on what we do or don’t do. It’s all about the action, effort and consistency. Many people lazy around or waste their time doing unnecessary things when there is no one around, especially when there is no one to monitor or caution them towards doing the right things that matter the most.

I want you to take a few seconds to ponder on the question above. Do you really help yourself grow or improve when nobody is looking at you? Do you always claim you’re bored, tired, weak or unmotivated when you have work to do but nobody is there to push you? If you are reading this and you are already the type that works hard on his or herself when nobody is around or watching, you’ll agree with me that you must have made so much progress within those periods of life when you were alone or not being watched but worked on developing yourself.

One thing about being successful is that most times the journey to get to where you wish to be at is often lonely- as you might not have many people who believe in your dreams or want to walk with you. You will sooner or later that while you cannot carry everyone along in life, there are many others who do not even want to walk with you. So it very possible that most times you would be lonely and then what you do with your time and on yourself matters a lot. Come with me; let me show you a secret in the paragraph below….

Private Victories vs Public Victories

When we look at successful people, what we tend to see every time or most times is the name, wealth, power, popularity, fame, cars, properties, grades, knowledge and other material or physical victories. Not many people wish to ask “what amount of work has this person done to become this great?” or “What has this person passed through or sacrifice to become this successful for everyone to celebrate today?”

Many a time, people focus too much on the end result and by-products that they fail to consider the amount of hard work that was put in to attain a level of greatness, success, fulfilment or achievement.
Private victories are those things that we achieve when nobody is around. There are the victories that mean so much more to us on a very personal level. Everyone has private victories. These are the small 20% of effort we put in order to gain 80% result. For instance, everybody might look at Drake or any other popular musician’s latest album and appreciate the song. We play the song, talk about the album’s art, the video, the tracks and so on, but people hardly wonder how many sleepless nights or the stress these musicians have to pass through to release quality songs. The worst part of this story is usually for the upcoming acts. Everybody likes when an underdog comes out and hits the market, but how many people actually sit to ponder what the artist must have passed through to get to the spotlight. If you look at the trend carefully, you would see that there’s always a background job done before the success is celebrated publicly.

Public victories like the name implies, are the after effect or by-product of every private victory. These are the things people see, like and can celebrate. Public victory is the 80% result caused by the 20% effort and work. For instance, when you get promoted at your place of work, people begin to see your new position’s benefits like; office, car, clothes and some other physical or material attributes, but they hardly see the character and mindset that made you become promoted. Lionel Messi and C.Ronaldo are celebrated for the results they show on the football field. They are given awards almost yearly, get the good deals and probably make more money than their teams mate. Every great man puts in the private work that turns around to become the public victory.

What actions should you take?

In my earnest opinion, I’ll advise that you spend more time focusing on your daily, weekly, monthly and yearly private victories. Too bad many people focus on large SBD payout and Steem for instance but never focus on what work has to be done to achieve things like high payouts, more SBD or reaching the trending page. If they focused more on what needed to be done (like writing properly, researching core topics, being more interesting, communicating with other steemians and so on), they will begin to do the things that matter most to get the best results.

Many young Nigerians focus on owning a good life, having cars, buying houses, spending money and basically living the wealthy lifestyle. Is it bad or wrong to think about these things? Certainly not, but the real change of lifestyle begins when you focus more on what needs to be done and what you are willing to do to get what you want than actually focusing on what you want. As much as you must consider focusing at the top of Mount Everest to get there, it is also really important to understand and focus more on where you’re placing your feet to climb up the mountain.

In concusion;

Your private victories are more important to you than the public ones. What you work on and achieve for yourself will definitely show for itself in public- if need be. Focus on building that skill, learning that course, reading those books, going to the gym, doing the late nights, working during weekends, keeping your integrity and all those other things that people do not see and watch how much you will so improve yourself till others notice and begin to appreciate or celebrate you too. Remember, it matters so much the work you put when you’re on your own. Before the greatest magician can climb up the stage to deliver a perfect show of 30 minutes, he must have spent more than 30 hours preparing for it.
