Welcome to the third part of this series of some of the greatest discoveries.

Discovery is the act of detecting something new, or something "old" that had been unrecognized as meaningful. With reference to sciences and academic disciplines, discovery is the observation of new phenomena, new actions, or new events and providing new reasoning to explain the knowledge gathered through such observations with previously acquired knowledge from abstract thought and everyday experiences. A discovery may sometimes be based on earlier discoveries, collaborations, or ideas. Some discoveries represent a radical breakthrough in knowledge or technology.

The discoveries started when man set foot on this planet earth and with time we have witnessed a huge number of discoveries till date that have had an impact on our lives.
If it were not for some of the important discoveries we would have been lagging far behind.

Let's take a look at some of the greatest discoveries :

Silk

The cocoons spun by the caterpillars of certain moths were found to be useful by Chinese if moistened.
The thread of cocoon was unwound and twisted with the threads of other cocoons which resulted in the formation of silk.
The earliest known silk was found to be of 2850 B.C.
A species of moths was soon domesticated and they were able to produce silk in abundance.

Electricity

We can't really imagine our lives without electricity, it is used in almost every field.
A lot of brilliant minds have contributed towards the discovery of electricity, however the 18th century American renaissance man Benjamin Franklin is credited for its discovery/invention.
Electricity is one of the greatest discoveries of recent times.
Before electricity people used to light their homes with fire but its applications were limited.
A lot of industries and vehicles run on electricity and it is impossible to imagine life without it.

Paper

People used to write on stones, walls and whatever material they could find feasible for writing but it was not the convenient way as writings would either fade away or they couldn't be carried from one place to another.

Chinese people discovered paper in 100 B.C.
People started sharing their thoughts and ideas to the world using paper as a medium.
Paper was also used as a means of communication in earlier days.
With the advent of new technologies the use of paper has been restricted somehow, however there is still huge demand for it

Australopithecus

Australopithecus is known to be the first human being on the planet earth.
The size of the brain of Australopithecus was found to be roughly around 35%of our brain size. The South Africans first thought that the skull was that of an ape but later they found that spinal cord was attached and therefore it was concluded that it us a skull of a human being.
Australopithecus was discovered by an unknown South African man but the further studies were carried out by Raymond Dart.
The skull was estimated to be 3.7 million years old.The Australopithecus were 4-4.5 feet tall.
