Being Born In This World Is Enough For You To Be Special!!! [SPOILER ALERT: Shingeki no Kyojin]

in #life6 years ago

During my break time this morning, I decided to watch the latest episode of Shingeki no Kyojin. It's becoming more and more exciting and intriguing as the episodes continue. It's making me so pumped up!

Before this episode ended, there was a flashback when Eren's mom asked the commandant guy (I forgot his name, but he was the grumpy bald guy during season 1 in their training) a very interesting question.

And guess what she answered to her own question...

I don't think that way. When it comes to my child, it's fine if he's never great. He doesn't have to be better than anyone. After all, just look at him. He's so cute. He's already special... because he was born in this world.

This statement from a parent to her child is very special. It's so timely because in one of my classes earlier, I had a free conversation in which we talked about inferiority complex of kids. That student used to work as a Psychiatric social worker and is now working as a tutor to some kids.

We discussed how some kids suffer from inferiority complex because of various reasons. Actually some if not most of the reasons lie within the family. Some parents, instead of encouraging and motivating their kids, they end up criticizing and comparing them to other kids.

Things like, "Why don't you follow his example? You're of the same age but he's better than you at everything?". OR "You should be like this... you should be like that... Don't be a disgrace to this family!"

Unfortunately, there are some people who can only see the faults of others. :( People develop such complex because the people around them make them feel that way.

Why not praise kids for even the littlest achievement they got?

Big things start from small things. You need not give kids some prize or award for doing good. Your praise and positive reinforcement are enough. Through these simple things, they'll develop their self esteem. When they commit some mistakes, it's okay. Allow them to. Let them experience failure, but don't forget to explain to them its importance and guide them on how to avoid it the next time.

Self-esteem is a need... and we can only achieve it once we completed the first three needs which are "physiological/basic needs", "safety and security" and of course "love and belongingness".

I really love how Eren's mother described him in the anime.

It's true! Everyone of us is special. You and I are special, so let's not think lowly of ourselves.
