I find that the KEY is to break everything down into MANAGEABLE chunks, which work together in a "system/routine", and then take the adequate "time off/out" (ex. sleep, nap. meditation, music listening/composition) to get out of the "mental ruts" and come back to "the work" reenergized and refocused...
Take pride in the job yet know the economy is a scam no matter what work you do so the side projects are something else... to separate, to feel you have a life beyond work. Yet the work has an ethic to it as the same as the rest of your life. The corporations and governments are indifferent (poor ethical standard) to the artisanal skill and rich life experience that goes into the craft of living/working/creativity, they only care about numbers, buying and selling people. So yea the projects are the something extra, beyond just work, beyond just money. Also incorporate the art aesthetics/philosophies to the workplace. Yea I have been overwhelmed and must manage it all. Can get out something on the fly, also need an appropriate rest to get any more substantiated project going, the only the fly thing is okay too 'cause you can work on the idea a bit at a time. Sometimes though in busy working conditions there isn't time for much.
