Growth Mindset & Fixed Mindset?
Today I learned a particularly important concept: growth mindset and fixed mindset.
Some scientists have done a set of experiments.
A group of students of a similar age was divided into two groups and ask them to solve a simple question. All of them answer correctly, the scientist then said to one of the groups of students," You are really smart,” and then said to another group of students: “You worked hard.”
Then he gave them some questions, but these questions are much more difficult than the first one and are beyond the scope of their ability. As a result, the group that was told that "you are really smart" couldn't do it, and the frustration was strong. The group that was told that "you worked hard" couldn’t do it, but would be able to face the failure.
The third time, the questions were much harder. This time, 80% of the people who were told "You're really smart" didn't want to do it. The group of people who were told that "you worked hard" was absolutely willing to try.
A simple word, "You are really smart" turn the students into a fixed mindset, and turned "you worked hard" into a growth mindset.
The group of students who were told that "you are really smart," they thought they were doing the right thing, and they got the results because they were smart. When they encounter a problem that they don't know, and it threatens the fact that they're smart, they'll choose to run away and not face and try something more difficult.
And the group of students who were told that "you worked hard," they think they solved the question and achieved the results, is because of their own efforts, as long as they put in efforts, even if it is a difficult topic, they will also be willing to face and try.
Growth mindset and fixed mindset will affect people's life, including love and work.
If you are in a relationship with someone with a fixed mindset, when there is a problem between you, he/she will feel that he/she has not found the right person, you are not the one who is meant to be, and he/she is likely to give up the relationship and go back to the person he/she thought was destined for him/her. Because people with a fixed mindset put efforts in searching, rather than on cultivating affection and solving the problem.
If you are in a relationship with someone with a growth mindset, when there is a problem, he/she will think, you are the right person, but there is a problem between us, everything will be alright after we deal with this problem.
This also explains our parents, they have no choice at that time, but they are very happy, fewer break up or divorce. Because the outside environment causes them to have no choice, thus, this has contributed to their growth mindset. Because there is no choice, so even if there are problems, they feel that after they have solved the problem, they can continue to live together.
Same goes to work. For a person with a fixed mindset, when there is a problem in the job, he/she will doubt the job, thinks that the job is not right for him/her, and then goes on to find his/her next job.
People with a growth mindset, when encounter problems in the workplace, he/she will think, this job is suitable for me, but now there is a problem, perhaps my ability is not enough, perhaps I was negligent, everything will be alright after I solve this problem.
Growth mindset is very important. You have to change quickly if you have a fixed mindset. Because if you have a fixed mindset, it is difficult to progress. When you feel that you only worth this much, you are such a person; then you will not want to try to change.
