→ 7 Traditional Must-Try Japanese Sweets

Grapee.jp has a list of traditional Japanese sweets. All of them are pretty good, but my go to Japanese sweet is #6 Yokan.

This jelly looking dessert is made from red bean paste, sugar and agar and comes in various flavours including green tea, chestnuts or sweet potato. The ingredients are hardened into a block and served in slices. The texture is similar to a paste and it can often be seen as part of tea ceremony. Mizu yokan contains more water which gives it a more translucent appearance and jelly-like texture.

Most sweets with red bean paste are also loaded with sugar (or artificial sweetener), are super sweet, and taste like… well, sugar. Yokan has sugar too, but less, which allows the other ingredients to come through. It’s a nice snack.

Number 4, dango, is also a great one. I prefer a kind they make around here, which is covered with hatcho miso. Mmmmm.
