|| Hearing the truth is like grabbing smoke in our family. ~The Reckoning ||

I wasn't keen about reading this book at first due to the reviews I saw that the book wasn't what they had expected from John Grisham. They made it sound like the book wasn't worth reading. But then, I already own a copy and definitely I was going to read it which I'm happy I did.
I haven't read much of Grisham's work but I do know about it.

Pete Banning, Clanton Mississippi’s most eminent and highly recognized citizen, hero, husband, christian and father returns home from the World War II after he was been assumed dead to his family and friends, walks into their Methodist church in broad daylight and in a calmly manner, shoots their pastor to death.
⚖️Did he try to cover up, run from his crime or accept it? Well reviewing everything would be a spoiler of which I don't want it to be so.
After the dead of the pastor, he refused to split out his motive for doing that. Not even his family or attorney. His reply to everyone was "I have nothing to say".
Hands tried to reach out to him to aviod him been killed (the punishment for first degree murder),but to no avail. He still stood with his saying "I have nothing to say" even while in deep shit.
He was executed and things became more shity, with his family paying for the crime he committed.

~After his death and punishment been paid by his family, it turns out his assumption was wrong which he never got to know.

📖The Reckoning is a book I got interested in right from the very first page. It's a legal thriller book set in 1946, and it takes on racism, mental health, revenge, war, and the question of justifiable murder. It was written from real life story.
On the part of the war, I was so shattered and sober due to what people had to go through. The World War II wasn't just a war to me, it was just so horrible.
Since I'm not a fan of history, it got me goggling things from the Battle of Bataan to the Bataan Death March during the World War II.
And I kept on saying, WAR IS HORRIBLE.
pete's surviving was a miracle that you won't ever thing of him surviving after what he went through.
~Judging the book base on suspense, I would rate it 4/5 because I was able to have a clue of what caused the murder quicker than I expected but then Grisham did a good one by taking me off-guard.
It's an enjoyable read which comes with a pack of sorrow.
