Today Lithuania celebrates Restitution of Independence after on 11th March 1990 it signed a proclamation of independence from the prison of Soviet Union.
29 years ago Lithuania was the first country to declare its independence from the Soviet Union, with a very uncertain and dangerous time following.
For almost one year no country recognized Lithuania's Independence across the world, Soviet Union imposed an economic blockade, there were shortages of energy supplies and lots of other goods which were not produced locally.
All this culminated with Soviet Uninion sending its troops to Lithuania in January 1991 and killing 14 unarmed civilians as well as wounding hundreds.
Soon after that the first Internationally significant recognition of independence came from Iceland.
The rest of the world followed.
