Do best friends of opposite sex become lovers??

I just felt I should bring this to this platform, because my close friend here told me he was actually falling in love with his female best friend and he's scared to propose to her for the fear of not ruining their friendship.

I advised him what I thought he should do, but please endeavor to give your useful advice.
