Reddit Manipulation

in #manipulation5 years ago (edited)

I've talked about this issue before, I happened to just now catch it in the act and had to share. Here's the video of this thread

As you can see, over a thousand comments with a variation of 5-10 different compliments about the exchange in question and 99% upvotes meaning barely anyone has downvoted it or there are way too many upvotes. Someone who doesn't check past the first few will probably go ahead and sign up to the exchange, maybe use the same email he uses for other exchanges and maybe even the same password (get password managers, people, it's important) and boom, some of you might have your funds stolen on the other exchanges you use the same credentials on.

Reddit has unfortunately become too mainstream, and since the community is not self-regulating in the same way as it is here on Steem where spammers either run out of bandwidth quick or face consequences of getting downvoted and not being able to pretend to be good guys later again or get to delete their past history. Not only that but on Reddit you can't see voting activity, which account voted what and which account downvoted what which here is made crystal clear through the blockchain.

Since Reddit is mainstream and gets a lot of attention, that means accounts receive value as there are black markets with demand to buy the accounts for malicious activity or advertisement. The activity of accounts that goes on on the Reddit database can only be viewed by an admin, so moderators and regular users will just have to guess what is going on. In this case it is of course quite easy to determine that this is all a paid advert and you can see how many accounts these guys have bought or paid to compliment the service. Imagine though the ones that aren't as cheap and obvious as these ones, they are probably advertising something to you right now if you are browsing Reddit without you knowing. As long as something can grab your attention, it will have value.

I am not saying that these things will be completely impossible on Steem, but everything being open-source and tools being possible to scan people's voting behavior and determine which accounts are acting "weird" it will be a lot easier to get rid of these manipulations and false advertisements.

I didn't even get into the whole dangers of what a centralized database such as Reddit can do unfairly to you and to your freedom of speech, that I can bring up another time and a lot more downsides about it.

Sort:

Talking about unfairly things to freedom of speech, remember when spez edited multiple comments made by users just because he didn't like their political views?

Reddit stopped being the bastion of free speech they once claimed to be, now most of the main subs are sown right tyrannical where discerning views are download to oblivion or outright deleted without warnings by moderators drunk on power, not us though I swear :^)

oh right yeah, i remember the fuckspez comments :D

yeah it's only downhill from here for reddit unfortunately, i was an early adopter of it too but it didn't bring me any rewards :( i don't even have more voting power with my 100k karma like wtf :(

Reddit karma gives you the power to feel I don't know, warm feelings inside.

Just get your self Reddit Premium, gotta reward Reddit for the content you create, They don't gather as much personal data on you for it to be really profitable so help them out a bit by rewarding them with money the creators should be getting :^)

It definitely feels weird to go to websites with things like the Reddit karma system that only a visual thing, after having spent so much time on the Steem blockchain!

Why? It’s this type of greed that burns me up. If there’s an angle or a way to scam.. there’s a fool who will find it and use it to there advantage. Malicious intent can hide behind non transparency of the block chain. Great example. Glad you caught it this time on video. Sweet.

I used to like reddit. The Bitcoin community was good before the bubble. Now when I told people to sell in December the mods wouldn’t even let my posts be put up. No bearish posts. Would have saved people a lot of koney

This is just one of the many problems with Reddit today. And people aren't really even critical to Reddit threads; most people assume that there is little manipulation going on, so they don't bat an eye when a threat like this pops up.. Unfortunately I think that a few people will fall for this scam unless it is removed by the mods of the subreddit fairly quickly.

Reddit threads are absolutely awful these days. Not the way it used to be and moderators delete posts in different categories too. Bitcoin thread is AWFULLLL

One more time transparency of blockchain could save us for this kind of practices... Bots are a real thing, not only in Steem...

Fake news with fake users chearing those lies. A lot of people believe in many things... Now with cryptos there is an open season to create scam. There are many ways to ensure the transparency of every project. But the scammers are just really tryhard =P

It makes me remember Cambrydge Analytica. What they do is more creepy than what media tells to the public. Systematic serialized manipulation for everyone!

By the way, ill manage all my password with KeePass, is easy to use, free and very safe as i read. (ill do a tutorial but is in spanish here , im going to translate it for the community)

Is not that i have a lot of money, but at least im used to work safe...

Thanks for share!

I used to be a Reddit regular user, but after I joined Steemit - I barely go there now (luckily I made this decision)

Same here. There are some active subreddits that barely have any activity here on Steem tough, so I still need to go there from time to time. We will poach a lot of their users once Hivemind is ready tough.

Well done @valth and hopefully, there will be more subreddits flock to Steemit in near future :D

Yeah, hopefully that will happen. It seems like Reddit has begun to ban a lot of subreddits, so we will probably see some "free speech refugees" in the future.

Those "Free speech refugees" will be converted into loyal Steemians soon :D

Hey @acidyo, please which password manager would you recommend???
You have made a good observation about using reddit. Just like twitter, there is a lot of conspiracies around them which I guess most people just tend to ignore or cant find a good alternative
