Yes the term 'free trade' is a sneaky one indeed. For one thing, this talk of "Trade war" (which is really just a sensationalist headline) is revealing just who is fighting for the people and who is fighting for corporations.
US has the leverage, Trump knows this and is just posturing to obtain favourable trade terms. There will be "no trade war".
Free trade isn't really free if economies can produce low quality goods (that are tested to fail just after warranty expiration) and use what is essentially slave labour, working in horrific conditions for very small pay, to provide goods to economies that are based on quality of work and quality of life. Free trade is really human exploitation. Tariffs are punishment for unfair practices.
