My Martial Arts Adventure in Japan

in #martialarts6 years ago

Back in 2015 i applied as a Delegate for my home town of Mississauga Ontario Canada. I was chosen with 6 other city workers to represent the city to go to the sister city Kariya Japan. Mississauga and Kariya has had a cultural sharing program between the 2 cities for over 20 years. We were to travel to Kariya Japan to share Canadian culture with the local Japanese in Kariya.
We all were matched with a local family to live with them for an entire week. They would take each delegate around for the week depending on their interests and also meet at different places to share the culture.
I told my live in family that i was into Martial arts so they arranged a many different fun activities involving there traditional martial arts in town.

The first thing i did with the family was take me to a temple to meditate and also visit some ancient temples

my live in family would take me out to many good sushi bars and ramen restaurants as well.

But it was nothing compared to the experience i had when i was taken to watch the world sumo champion train at his training hall and also got to eat with him.

After that i was treated to a private one on one karate session with a local Sensei at a traditional karate dojo in town.

I felt extremely grateful for the hospitality they were showing me, as it still didn't stop there, the next day they would let me try on one of there traditional samurai outfits
and also kimonos. Apparently some of the kids thought i looked the part too much and started to cry, they would not come close to me for a picture.

I can truly say this was one of the best trips i have ever had, mainly due to the incredible hospitality to the experience of living with a local family to the traditional Japanese food. This was truly one of my most cherished travel experiences and i will always be grateful i had this opportunity to share my culture with them.
