Nice observation. There is a type of attraction occuring to the circle in the middle. This is related to the property that sin(x) behaves like x for small x. The middle of the image corresponds to the origin. So if you look at the underlying equation for values close to the origin (so small x and y) it behaves like (x2+y2)2 = (n x)2 + (n y)2 which, after some re-writing, corresponds to an equation for a circle.
