Half Of Odd Numbers

in #mathematics5 years ago

Hi there. This guide for young students is on finding half of odd numbers. This is the follow-up of half of even numbers. It is assumed that the student is familiar with half of even numbers.

Some of the math text is screenshotted from RMarkdown.

A Review Of Half Of Even Numbers

Even numbers are numbers where you can make pairs from where everyone has a partner.

For single digit numbers, even numbers include 2, 4, 6 and 8. For whole numbers that are 10 or above, even numbers end with a 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 (in the ones digit place).

To find half of an even number, think of a (smaller) number added by itself to get than number. As an example, half of 12 is 6 as 6 + 6 = 12.

As a review, here is a table of even number from 2 to 24 with its associated halves.

Half Of One

Let's say that you and a friend have one large cake/pizza/pie. You want to split this into two equal pieces. The one piece is for you and the other equal piece is for your friend. This one piece is called a half as you take one piece from two equal pieces of a whole.

We can write half in its decimal form as 0.5 or in its fraction form as .

Half Of Odd Numbers: One + An Even Number

With odd numbers if we make pairs we will always have one left out. This one left out does not have a partner. We can say that an odd number is an even number (that is smaller) plus one. As an example the number 15 is 14 + 1.

TO find half of odd numbers break it down as 1 plus an even number, take half of the even number, take half of one and then add the halves together. This makes more sense in the examples below.

Example One

Example Two

What is half of 31?

Thirty-one can be split into 1 plus thirty. Half of one is always one-half and half of thirty is 15 (as 15 + 15 = 30). Combining 15 and one-half gives fifteen and a half.

Example Three

What is half of 65?

Sixty-five is equal to 1 + 64. Taking half of each is one-half and 32 (respectively). Half of 65 would be 32 and a half.

Half Of Larger Odd Numbers By Using Expanded Form

--

For larger numbers such as thee digit numbers and above, it is a good idea to use expanded form to split the numbers. From the expanded form you can take half of each number and add the halves together. This makes more sense with the examples.
