Amazon Kindle Bestselling Book Published 2 Days Into Maui Wildfires Raises Red Flags For Publishers, Reviewers
A self-published book about Maui's wildfires that shot to the top of several Amazon Kindle bestseller categories days after the fires broke out has raised suspicions, as the mysterious author of Fire And Fury: The Story of the 2023 Maui Fire And Its Implications For Climate Change appears to have few identifying details or an explanation for how a book could possibly have been written so quickly.
published on Amazon on Aug. 10—two days after the start of the deadly wildfires that have killed 111 people and left 1,000 more missing on the Hawaiian island of Maui—and claims to “chronicle the events of August 8-11.”
The 44-page book, available as an e-book or paperback, claims to have been written by a Dr. Miles Stone, but the about-the-author section on the Amazon page simply reads, "I'd rather not say," and no such person seems to exist in the public record, according to a LexisNexis search.
A Goodreads author page credits someone of the same name with more than a dozen equally incomplete titles all published since May 2023, including "The life story of Hunter Biden: The President's Son — A Life of Tragedy, Drama, Addiction And Scandal" and "Nicholas Sparks Life Story Book: A Walk Through His Memories, Challenges, and Achievements.”
The book immediately drew the ire of skeptical readers on social media who accused Amazon of "fronting propaganda" and said the title seems to have been published by "a scammer” generating content with artificial intelligence.
Fire and Fury racked up 21 one-star ratings calling it "inaccurate and insensitive" and "absolute garbage" before Amazon limited the ability to review to only verified purchasers.
Amazon did not respond to Forbes’ request for comment Thursday.

The victims and survivors of Maui's wildfires have been left with 'napalm-like' injuries, the likes of which haven't been seen since the Vietnam war, according to rescue teams now tasked with combing through the incinerated rubble of Lahaina.
Michael Havoc Thomas, a military veteran who owns and operates HAVOC, a private rescue and training company in Hawaii, gave a harrowing description of the reality of the devastation.
'The news will not be able to show you the real survivors or the real victims. It’s very WW2 flamethrowers and Vietnam napalm like. That is not an exaggeration.'
Napalm is an incendiary mixture of a gelling agent and a volatile petrochemical (usually petrol or diesel fuel). The name is a portmanteau of two of the constituents of the original thickening and gelling agents: coprecipitated aluminium salts of naphthenic acid and palmitic acid.
Napalm B is the more modern version of napalm (utilizing polystyrene derivatives) and, although distinctly different in its chemical composition, is often referred to simply as "napalm".
A team led by chemist Louis Fieser originally developed napalm for the US Chemical Warfare Service in 1942 in a secret laboratory at Harvard University.
Of immediate first interest was its viability as an incendiary device to be used in fire bombing campaigns during World War II; its potential to be coherently projected into a solid stream that would carry for distance (instead of the bloomy fireball of pure gasoline) resulted in widespread adoption in infantry flamethrowers as well.
Napalm burns at temperatures ranging from 800 to 1,200 °C (1,470 to 2,190 °F). It burns longer than gasoline, is more easily dispersed, and adheres to its targets. These traits make it both effective and controversial. It has been widely deployed from the air and from the ground, the largest use being via airdropped bombs in World War II in the incendiary attacks on Japanese cities in 1945.

Michael said he had debriefed with a team leader whose tactical gear smelled like 'burning flesh'.
'When I hugged him I smelled him. Honestly, I can only compare it to experiences from the military, never had to fight a fire before so I can only tell you it’s like doing a BDA after spooky levels an objective.
'The smells of burning metal and flesh on the gear he was carrying from dragging people out of some of the rubble.
'Majority is too hot to touch. His boots and other rubber equipment were melted and unserviceable,' he said.
'The tears and smeared residue of dirt on his face tell a story he hasn’t been able to comprehend yet.'
Hawaii emergency management records show no indication that warning sirens sounded before people ran for their lives from wildfires on Maui that killed at least 55 people and wiped out a historic town. Instead, officials sent alerts to mobile phones, televisions and radio stations — but widespread power and cellular outages may have limited their reach.
Hawaii boasts what the state describes as the largest integrated outdoor all-hazard public safety warning system in the world, with about 400 sirens positioned across the island chain to alert people to various natural disasters and other threats.
But many survivors said that they didn't hear any sirens or receive a warning that gave them enough time to prepare and only realized they were in danger when they saw flames or heard explosions nearby. The wildfires are the state's deadliest natural disaster since a 1960 tsunami that killed 61 people.
