What Are Flavanoids and What Are Their Benefits?
Flavanoids are chemicals found in a large variety of plants. They are the chemicals responsible for some vivid colors we see in the plants. Flavonoids comprise a large group of chemicals and are classified into more than 6,000 types.
Flavanoids are strong antioxidants and they have anti-inflammatory effects. They also have many benefits for the immune system.
Flavanoids have six main classes listed below. For each class, the main plants in which they are mostly found are named in the parentheses:
- Anthocyanins (berry fruits, such as the blueberries)
- Flavanols (green tea, red wine, and chocolate)
- Flavonols (onions, leeks, broccoli)
- Flavanones (citrus fruits and tomatoes)
- Flavones (parsley and celery)
- Isoflavones (soy)
