German painter of the 20th century he lived to see both world wars ; he served in the first one and said that he was 'dead' during that period. He was arrested by both the French police and Gestapo during WWII, by the former because he was German and by the latter because his art was considered heretical and disruptive by the nazi regime ; he managed to flee to the USA. His painting style was influenced by his peers and found its roots in late expressionism and surrealism.
