Letter to my high school self:

Hey, you. I see you wandering around the mall, consuming to try to feel connected. Wearing brand names blazoned over your body in an effort to feel like you belong to some kind of community. Trying to buy what cannot be bought - trying to buy the kind of pleasure & interconnection that has never been & will never be for sale.
Criticizing others because it’s the only form of interaction that you feel worthy of. Being mean just to feel something.
Wanting desperately to fit in even though you’ve always stuck out. Being bored & unfulfilled & feeling shame about who you are.

Know this:
One day, the life you summon from the earth with your bare hands will fill you with a deep & profound joy that no purchase ever could. One day, you will welcome your emotions without judgement & be able to sit with your discomfort to learn what it has to teach you.
One day soon, you will have a community of people that love you & celebrate who you are, that you love to celebrate who they are.
You will learn to communicate nonviolently & to step into the kind of life story that thrills you.
You will thrive on kindness & compassion & context.
You will LOVE being a wild card that changes lives, AND you will even begin to love yourself. (!!)
Trust the process. You got this.
