A Mother in Mannville and a Blackboard
"A Mother in Mannville" published in 1936 by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1896-1953). The short story is about a 12-year orphaned boy bonding with a female author.
"A Mother in Mannville" takes place up in the Carolina Mountains in a baby cottage maintained by an orphanage. The orphanage is about a half a mile away from the cottage. A female writer came to the cottage seeking a quiet and isolation place to work. While she was there she met a 12 year old boy named Jerry and he has been at orphanage since he was four. In a very short time they bond and get to know each other. After getting intimate, he told about his mother. Hearing that the writer feel uncomfortable. Before leaving, the writer goes to the orphanage to say goodbye to Jerry but Jerry disappears in the mountains. Then she heard something inconceivable that Jerry had lied to her about having a mother.
I was a student of Madhupur shahid smrity higher secondary school. One of the best school of the country having consistently good result in SSC and HSC. Our English teacher was Nizam sir. The short story "A Mother in Mannville" was in our syllabus. Sir had a different passion for this story. He wanted to teach the story very carefully.
Every day he used to come to the class and drew pictures of the Carolina Mountain and orphanages on the blackboard. Then he started to teach the story step by step. i was bored to see drawing picture on blackboard. i wanted to get rid of it but how could it possible ? Some how i knew if i rubbed the Blackboard with the candle, rubbed place on Blackboard can not be written with chalk. I shared this secret with my best friend.
on the next day, i found a candle in our class room and decided to rubbing the Blackboard with it. I just rubbed the upper portion on the Blackboard and then came to my seat. But my friend did the rest, he rubbed the candle both side the Blackboard.
We had five classes per day, though we had six subjects. On that day the first period was physics. Sir entered the class and as usual finishing the roll call he began to write on Blackboard. He tried to write on board but there's nothing visible on the board. He was flabbergasted at the total complexity of the situation. He got angry and left the class room. Next peroid was math and math sir did the same thing and left the class room.
Third period was English, Nizam sir entered the class room and tried to write something but all his effort goes in vain. All class dismissed that day. But A three member committee was formed to investigate the incident. culprit/culprits will be given a severe punishment.
Both me and my friend got so much scared but there was no witness of this incident. We promised that We will never ever admit that we've done this work and we kept our promise. Nobody knows that we did that work till now.
Recently, we have decided that we will admit that incident and beg apology for our deeds.
