Cat in the Driveway | Microfiction

Ellie was looking out the window when the cat came back, crawling into the driveway.

A sudden burst of energy surged through her as Ellie hobbled to the front door and out of the house on a walking cane. “Andrew...Andrew…”

The tires of the BMW made a screeching sound, the same screeching sound of a cat that that stretched out its front paws and dragged its claws across the grey cement.

The white cat sat still, with a purr in its throat before it went completely silent. Out came Andrew in a tailored suit, holding his phone between his right ear and shoulder. “Better get it done, right now… do you want to be fired?”

He did not so much as glance at Ellie when he passed her an envelope with an embellished “Happy Birthday!” on it. “Sorry Mum, some issues with my tech guys, gotta go—”

Andrew returned hurriedly into his BMW. With his back turned, he could not see Ellie’s trembling hands and forlorn facial expression.

The cat started to purr once more, then dragged its sharp claws across the grey driveway before creeping away. Ellie once again took up her seat at the window, keeping her vigil for the seventy-seventh year straight.

As every cat owner knows, nobody owns a cat.

The prompt given by @jayna is "sound".

I was greatly inspired in the past week by Milan Kundera, who wrote the Unbearable Lightness of Being. Great use of metaphors (both extended and otherwise).

Besides upvotes, some feedback and suggestions on how I can improve as a writer is greatly appreciated!

I didn't expect the feels, this is some title and header image bait, reeeeee

Time is limited and everyone has to pay it for everything...it's a matter of prioritising what matters the most. And indeed, the cat quote. 😶

@lilacse Hahaha shall I apologize for the title and image bait? XD

Indeed. And if we don't consciously prioritize, the things most important may just be neglected.

Great story, @joeylim! I love the fact that it's sort of about the cat, but not really. There's a much bigger story, here. Very touching.
