Microsoft finally acquired GitHub

in #microsoft6 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians! Today I was excited by the news that finally, the deal has come to an end. Microsoft has acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion. This is definitely a great deal. But the new has led developers and GitHub users puzzled. There are millions of GitHub users in the world with both public and private repositories. GitHub is very excited to announce about this deal in their blog.

GitHub is used by over 28 million developers and holds over 85 million “repositories” of code

Though we are not quite sure if this is going to be a healthy acquiring or not, there have been several articles and posts discussing this merge. From what we can see Microsoft is inclining more towards the open-source model. They have been releasing lots of open source products and community edition software to support more open source development. Considering all those aspects, people see this as a good deal.

More about the deal

For the last few days, the actual value of the deal was still under negotiation. Whatever the value may be, it was a great reputation for GitHub to be acquired by Microsoft. The founder of GitHub says, they never expected such a heading in the news when they initially started GitHub. Who would have expected such things? GitHub is being used by not just individual developers to store their code but it is also being used by many corporate companies to store their company code.

Ever since there was a news about this deal, BitBucket and GitLab have been receiving lots of traffic. Everyone is expecting Microsoft to bring lots of innovation to the GitHub platform but we still don't know how it can end up. This is not just a platform being used by the opensource coders. Even big companies like Facebook and Google have been using GitHub as a code repository for their community projects. Many frameworks that have emerged in the recent years have their source code and documentation stored on GitHub. This deal will not only make them think about retaining their code here but also to trust a company that has been a rival for the past decade.

What is the impact?

Most of the developers who have been using GitHub for all their projects are now getting ready to face even the worst. Just because it is being acquired by Microsoft it need not necessarily mean that it can continue to be a free service. Some of the developers have already started making plans to move their code to other repositories as well. Though we all know that GitHub was ruling the repository world, there are several other alternatives available for GitHub. The developers have started to work on their backup plans.

Most of the popular developers and open source contributors comment saying that "Even if is going to be a good deal, it is safer to keep the code in multiple repositories just to be on the safer side." There have been articles and tutorials already revolving around the internet about migrating your source code from GitHub to GitLab. There are many developers who see this in a more positive sense where they now feel GitHub be more secure and comfortable to store their source code.

Let's all hope to see some good enhancements and features after this new deal. Hope you enjoyed reading the article. If you have any views on this topic, please share your views in the comments section.

Although I haven't had a chance to try this tool, it seems to be very useful because of what you say, this microsoft membership must be a big leap, it's sure to be a big change for them.

This is being used by developers to share their source code in a public and private repository. Thanks @melvadg for your comments. 😀

This was news to me... I am both surprised and worried... Not sure how this will turn out if Microsoft starts charging for maintenance going forward...

Hopefully, there should be nothing for us to worry about. Just because Microsoft is working towards making everything free to use. And hopefully, he should not mess up the existing features of GitHub. There is definitely a good scope for this platform to get even better. Thanks for the comments @rajivv203 .😂
