Windows 10 S as the New Default

in #microsoft6 years ago (edited)

According to the Verge article, Microsoft is willing to make their lock down OS even more restricted. Not only do they control your update cycle unless you're an enterprise user (and reserve the right to sue you if you attempt to turn off these updates), but the corporation actually investigates the possibility of making every Windows 10 edition only compatible with UWP applications by default. To unlock Win32 applications you will either have to be a Home edition user or pay up to $50 USD for the "feature" that is supposed to be the Windows OS itself - you know, just like any other Windows iteration imaginable. Basically, pro users will be forced to pay for backwards compatibility.
The idea is backed by the fact that 60% of the new Windows S devices' owners never switch to the full version of the OS even though the transition is free. Don't know about you, but to me 60 percent (of clueless customers who don’t know any better) sounds like a pretty controversial split. What if it was 55 percent? 51 still counts? What is it if not a lame excuse to further restrict the users in terms of what they can and cannot do with a product they already paid for. Seems like the trend of microtransactions is catching up like fire not only in gaming but software industry in general and even in camera gear.
Shoutout to the warez lovers out there rocking a cracked Windows 10 pro edition - better get ready to pay for unlocking your S with your wallet.
