There is no doubt or debate that depression is one of the top mental illnesses. Having said that, I think that depression is the decision of the mind rather than an illness. That's another topic for another day.

Recently, I came across a technique that helped me understand how depression is created and how one can get rid of depression in a few minutes. Yes, in a few minutes. It is very much possible.

Physiology: If you are told that there is a person standing behind your door who is suffering from depression and if you are asked to guess his physiology, what would you say? His/her head should be down, eyes down, the body posture is slumped and just by one look you at that person's body language you know that there is something wrong. In order to be depressed anyone has to take on the physiology of a depressed person.

Without a doubt as soon as you start changing this physiology, it instantly changes the mindset. At that moment, there is no depression. That's why one of the suggestions that one often gets is to go out, go dancing, go do something. What they are saying is moving your body differently creates different states. It is as simple as that.

Language: Language plays a huge role in creating depression. Yes, you heard it right. Depression is created and the recipe is quite simple. The language used by the depressed person is quite different than a normal person. In order to be depressed you need to use certain words like "Why does this happen to me" "Why me" "Why can't anything go right". Next time observe the language patterns of anyone who is going through depression.

Words are used to communicate what we feel inside. The words anyone uses says a lot about their state of mind directly or indirectly. Making some changes to the language patterns can bring about a change instantly. For example, instead of saying "I am so pathetic, I can't do anything right" one could rephrase it as "What could I do to make this better". "Why does this happen to me" to "Everything happens for a reason.

Language plays a huge role in changing our state of mind. It can change the mindset in a few minutes.

Focus: The third most important thing is focus. What we focus on we feel. The difference between a person who is depressed and a person who is optimistic is just one, focus. What are you focused on? Usually, during this state called depression, there is a constant internal dialogue that happens. People tell themselves sad stories about why life is not working out for them. Their focus is mainly on the negative. Change the focus and you get a new perspective.

Let's say someone who is constantly focused on all the negative things around him and constantly tells himself there is nothing to look forward to. This person is going to be depressed as long as she/he focuses on this. The moment the attention or focus goes elsewhere there are new thoughts generated.

Ask yourself -- what do I focus on most of the times? Do I focus on the problem or the solution?

What are my thoughts on a daily basis?

Then immediately go on to change your focus.
