Self driving cars will never happen.

The girl walking a bicycle that got hit, was hit because

THE PROGRAM IGNORES BIKES!

That is the state of the technology. The program cannot handle the pathing that bikes take, so ... it ignores them.
And we talk about self driving cars being right around the corner.
We are being sold pie-in-the-sky. (probably for some nefarious reason)

But, that is not the reason self driving cars will never happen.

The market for cars will die first.
Further, if we were honest about moving people, there are far better alternatives.
If we envision a world where you had tons of self driving cars, then why not build self driving trains, where the city bus/train was every two minutes. And would route based on the passengers. Far easier, far cheaper, far better.

Really, the need for self driving cars seemingly exists only for some very stupid assumptions.

• That we have roads.
• That we live all spread out in suburbs. (not urban, not rural)
• That we have tons of people commuting each day to a job.
• That we continue to live in cities.

All of these are going away.
