The meaning of fasting in Arabic is shaum and Siyam. The word shaum means to abstain from something, to refrain, to prevent oneself in Arabic. In terms of jurisprudence, it means: to abstain from eating, drinking and husband and wife (jima) between husband and wife from dawn to sunset (maghrib) consciously and by seeking purpose. Allah Almighty has obliged for the Muslims to fast during the month of Ramadan, the month is sayyidusy syuhuur (penghulu other months), to him began the decline of the Qur'an. The month of Ramadan is the month of obedience, self-approach, virtue, goodness, as well as a month of forgiveness, grace and contentment. Therefore, if one of you fasts, then let him not speak foul and not be foolish. If anyone is fighting or berating him, then let him say, 'I am fasting' (twice). For the sake of Rabb my soul is in his hand, the smell of the mouth of the fasting man is more sweet in the sight of Allah Ta'ala than the smell of musk oil, where he leaves his food, drink, and lust for I (Allah). Fasting is for Me and I will reward it for it and one good is rewarded tenfold. "(Narrated by Muslim Bukhari) Fasting in Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam.
