فيتامين د والكالسيوم / Vitamin D and calcium
يقوم فيتامين د بزيادة مستوى الكالسيوم في الدم عن طريق:[١] زيادة امتصاص الكالسيوم من الأمعاء. تقليل فقدان الكالسيوم عن طريق البول من خلال زيادة عمليّة إعادة امتصاص الكالسيوم في الكلى. وهنا تجدر الإشارة وبشكلٍ سريعٍ إلى أنّ نقص الكالسيوم في الدم يحفّز إفراز غدد جارات الدرقية لهرمونها، والّذي يعمل على زيادة مستوى الكالسيوم في الدّم عن طريق تحليل الكالسيوم من العظام، وعندما تزيد نسبة الكالسيوم في الدّم، يقوم هرمون الكالسيتونين (بالإنجليزية: Calcitonin) والذي تفرزه الغدة الدرقية لتخفيض نسبة الكالسيوم في الدم عن طريق زيادة ترسيبه في العظام
