عنكبوت الارملة السوداء هى اخطر انواع العنكبوت الموجود فى العالم وهى الاكثر سمية بين انواع العنكبوت حيث يعتبر سم عنكبوت الارملة السوداء اقوى 15 مرة من سم الافعى

يتغذى عنكبوت الارملة السوداء على الحشرات والعناكب الاخرى وتظل انثى عنكبوت الارملة السوداء معلقة لاسفل فى الشبكة التى تقوم ببنائها فى انتظار فريستها وعند وقوع الفريسة فى الشبكة تقوم الانثى باحاطة الفريسة بخيوط الشبكة وتضع انيابها فى الفريسة وتفرز سمها وتنتظر عشر دقائق حتى يظهر مفعول السم وتبدأ فى امتصاص السوائل التى تخرج من الفريسة لتتغذى عليها .

متوسط عمر انثى عنكبوت الارملة السوداء ثلاث سنوات بينما الذكر لا يعيش اكثر من شهر او شهرين وهى تعيش منفردة الا في موسم التزاوج فى اواخر الربيع ويعتبر التزاوج الذي يتم بين عنكبوت الارملة السوداء زواج دموي لانه عادة ما تقوم الانثى بقتل الذكر بعد التزاوج واكله وهذا سبب قصر عمر الذكر ، وتقوم انثى عنكبوت الارملة السوداء بوضع حوالي 200 بيضة فى كل حويصلة ويفقس البيض بعد حوالي 30 يوم وقليل من الصغار ما يظل على قيد الحياة لمدة ثلاثة شهور وهو سن البلوغ .

لدغة عنكبوت الارملة السوداء سامة للغاية ولكن لحسن الحظ فهي عادة ليست قاتلة بالنسبة للبشر ما عدا الاطفال وكبار السن وضعاف البنية يمكن ان تكون لدغة العنبكوت قاتلة فى تلك الحالة ، ولكن الاعراض التى يمكن ان يشعر بها الانسان نتيجة لدغة عنكبوت الارملة السوداء هى الام فى العضلات وغثيان وشلل الحجاب الحاجز مما يؤدي الى صعوبة التنفس ، والالام قد تستمر لمدة تتراوح بين 8 - 12 ساعة وقد تستمر لعدة ايام اخرى
