Followers of traditional African religions pray to various spirits as well as to their ancestors. These secondary spirits serve as intermediaries between humans and the primary God. Most African societies believe in a single Supreme Creator God (Chukwu ,
Nyame , Olodumare , Ngai , Roog , etc.).

Africa is home to a great many cultures and to a thousand or more languages. Although no single set of myths and legends unites this diverse population, different culture groups and regions share some common elements.
The number of gods and goddesses varies from culture to culture. The Buganda of east central Africa have one of the largest pantheons, with 20 or more deities. Many peoples regard the earth, sun, and moon as gods. In the Congo River region, the most densely wooded part of Africa, the forest itself is a deity—or else a mysterious otherworld where spirits dwell.

Myths carry over from instances in the past, having coalesced through time into something quite different from what they used to be. They represent the traditions of any particular culture or religion and are fables to amuse or beware people. Africa is home to a versatile and eclectic group of people, spread out through the continent, each with their own beliefs and customs, their own languages and way of life. With the Southern Africa cut off from the world throughout an extended period in history, their beliefs are more deep rooted and the myths are an active part of their life, even today. Influenced by a wide variety of religions, such as Christianity and Islam, as well as people.
