Management has been explained to mean working through others. The ability of a manager to carry workers along at all task will determine his/her success and efficiency. A manager’s job is therefore not to just manipulate or run people through achieving set goals, but rather to visualise better approaches to make them happy for perfect team bonding.

What makes people work to the satisfaction of the manager is therefore called motivation.

ELEMENTS OF MOTIVATION

A manager that succeeds in motivation will succeed on his job, while the one that fails to motivate will surely fail on his job. This is true because men, through which he/she is working can consciously or unconsciously offer or withhold their services, depending on how they are managed. We have seen workers that served a certain manager so well against all odds but failed to replicate similar standard of service when the manager is changed.

Even at home we've seen some children who wholeheartedly serves a parent and grudgingly serve the other. This is due to the manner at which each parent handles the same children in the same single family.

Surely, the quality of services rendered happily with all enthusiasm will be different from the one rendered grudgingly or under duress. The central managerial problem of motivation is how to induce a group of persons, each having distinctive needs and unique personality to work together towards the organizational objectives.

Managers must convince members that to achieve their own objectives, they must contribute positively to the organizational objectives. This may seem easy to achieve but it’s not always so in practice because of the complex nature of man. To practice distinct motivation therefore, a manager requires a deep understanding of motivational objectives. He/she must know the needs of the workers and possess the needed skills to subject their individual needs to achieve organizational objectives.

MODELS OF HUMAN MOTIVATION

Motivation is a general term applied to the entire classes of drives, desire, needs, wishes, and similar forces. To say that managers motivates their subordinates is to say that they do those things which they hope will satisfy them and induce them to act in a desired manner.
