The Will within your palm

When I see people make recourse to fate, predestination or government deficiency in personal issues, a particular question crosses my mind- "Does the society shape people or do people shape the society?"

Over the years I have thought long and hard and at the moment I think I have reached the realization that the vision and strength that the human mind possesses is of great potential and if properly channeled has the ability to shape the society, change it and alter destinies.

The basis of this conclusion is well portrayed in a 19th century poem by William Ernest, titled "Invictus."

Therein is contained the lines "...I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul." These words are not only profound but also inspiring and they resonate deeply in me. They are allusions to the philosophy of "triumph of will" and the scope of "mind of matter."

I stand with this point of view that people should take active part in shaping the society in which they live and only by such can greatness be achieved.

I reject the paradoxical philosophy that has been the basis for those who ask "who can control his fate?", these people obviously, are of the belief that destiny and fate lies solely in the hands of a "supreme being" or "higher power".

I am also a believer in the supremacy of God and in his ability to rule over the affairs of men but I am also of the stance that to a great extent we the "powerless mortals" can control our life patterns and our future is determined by the paths we choose to take.

"Weak minds are shaped by the society while the powerful minds shape the society"

Throughout the course of history it has always been the powerful and strong-willed individuals that have determined course of history and made the difference.

Without Martin Luther King Jnr and the power of his will the protestant church wouldn't have been established and the United States of America would not have had a civil rights movement.

Without Queen Elizabeth the First and the power of her will, England would have remained a tiny Island state and would have been overwhelmed by the Spanish Armada.

Without Kwame Nkrumah and the power of his will, there would have never been any concept of "Pan-Africanism".

Without Mark Zukerburg and the power of his will there would have been no Facebook.

Without Bill Gates and the power of his will, there would have been no Microsoft.

These people had the drive, the courage, the vision to shape the fortunes of nations and affect humanity as a whole.

They were not shaped by the society but rather shaped the society by the power of their will.

Talk about "triumph of the will".

What cripples will power the most is lack of confidence in one's ability and also the fear of failure. The character traits that makes a real hero stand out is the ability to persevere against all odds, reject the fear of failure and cultivate an strong belief in his abilities.

Will power needs to be accompanied by an independent mind.
Sometimes you need to damn feelings and do what's in your heard...
Will power is for the fierce and not the faint

You are right @fisteganos
That's why i don't believe that popular saying what will be, will be. Instead, I believe that what WE let be, will be.. The power is in our hands, we just have to take it.

Brilliant post and oh so true. I hear so many excuses from people as to why they constantly fail, and why things are always against them. One person in particular is always whining and complaining that she is always being used and never seems to get anywhere in life. We have choice, and need to believe that we all can and do make a difference....it is up to us as to what kind of difference we make.
Of course belief in self is important, and not everyone is fortunate enough to have it.
Belief in "being".....being part of a whole should be emphasised from childhood on. When one understands that everything each of us does affects everyone else and life, how can one not use that influence to improve society as a whole. Sadly though through religion especially many have become divided, oppressed and unable to exercise their freedom of choice. They have been duped into allowing other individuals to make choices for them.
Will is a powerful thing when harnessed properly.
