'The Old Gods and the New'

In the old days, places under linden trees were spots where local people would meet and discuss matters of mutual interest. These trees were regarded as holy trees of happiness, symbols of loyalty, bringers of prosperity. This immediately rings a bell, right? 'The Old Gods and the New', remember? I bet this is where George found his idea for personifying the white-barked, red-leaved trees in Game of Thrones.

This particular tree is alive for centuries, older than many countries of the world. According to the legend, this is the exact place where Matija Gubec started the rebellion against the nobles in 1573. The story about the linden tree where peasants gathered was passed down for generations. There is not much evidence of how that event happened exactly but it is a fact that it happened. "The peasant rebellion", is a novel based on real historical events written by August Šenoa in the 19th century.

The linden tree was 30m high before a severe storm hit it in 1945. Today, Gubec Linden is protected as a natural monument and is taken care of by a team of biologists who are making sure that it lives as long as possible. Measures are put in place so that the heavy branch doesn't split the stem.

Also, there is a young branch growing from the old root. I like that as a symbol of new generations taking over. A natural way of going forward.

I remember, as children in elementary school, we were told that Gubec, the head of class rebellion in the 16th century, was the first Croatian communist. Regime loved to take advantage of history and tweak facts in serving its own needs, as the party officials deemed fit. However, socialist system that I grew up in was a mild one. Private initiative was not fully banned, merely limited to small businesses. One could also travel abroad without permissions. But, we still had to wear red bandanas and blue caps on school events and sing retarded songs about Tito and his glorious escapades. Still, in our days, Tito's personality cult is alive. A bunch of his fans, dressed in already mentioned school uniforms, claiming to be proud Party Pioneers, are known to march around his house on his birthday. Luckily, this brainwashed jolly bunch is mostly over 80. So nobody is taking that seriously. There is a hole in the tree's stem where one see through. The inside seems to be hollow. Just like socialism.

The linden must be over 700 years old. It is a landmark and a tourist spot. There is also a board put there by local people who frequent the place. Whoever arrives with good intentions is warmly greeted and welcomed by the locals. But, be careful, 'Do not step on the roses!', as the sign says! That might not be taken lightly ;-)

Just kidding. But, don't step on the roses, anyway! Rather always find a little time to enjoy their scent.

Enjoy your day! :-)

Hey velimir,

You are back again with another good post. I really wait for your post because it motivates and encourages me to plan my trip too because I have never done it and I know if I will keep reading your posts, it will keep the motivation alive and one day I will be exploring the world.

Yes, it is absolutely right, in the past these big trees were used by the elders of the village to sit and chit chat. Major decisions were also taken under these trees.

I agree with you friend @suf1an, @velimir always come back with good publications that motivate one to travel xD and my grandparents of the town still sit under the trees to chat and make decisions, very good post.

Trees are the rememberers (sp intentional) of things gone by. This seems to be one with more memories than most. I'm glad some one is looking out for it. Here in my country the Linden tree is an ornamental. It's really good to see a naturally occurring Linden.

Some of my favorite places on earth include ancient trees. The Sequoia grove in Yosemite NP, the Bristlecone Pines of S. Oregon, the Juniper Trees in E. Washington. Trees that can tell of the days before Columbus.

Thanks for another great post. One of the best things about a MC: You can smell the roses just going by, without having to step on them :)

Believe you me @velimir you're having a good time with your travels.

The old gods and the new

Game of thrones is one movie franchise I've loved right from the first episode in its initial season. I don't know why but I do all the same.
Given that, I'll wanna say beautiful association between the red-leaved white-barked tree in the game of thrones movie, the Linden tree in its entirety and this post's title. It's prove of deep thinking and imagination. I once told you you've got an awesome mind.

Nice job

I'm a Nigerian and I love climbing trees so I believe that sign is directly for me 😂😂😂 and I'll try my best to adhere to it strictly. Lol.

Thanks for making me smile

@velimir everyday i am more and more impressed and inspired by your posts! I cannot believe how a person can be so talanted and the fact that you share your awesomeness with us is much apreciated! Thank you and stay incredible.

thank you for following my work. :)

@velimir please it is all my pleasure!

I do not know the story of the lime tree, but now I will know about it.
The tree looks impressive and massive, but more impressive is its age. This tree was well taken care of, so the fact that it will stay here for a long time is a fact.
A good comparison of an empty tree with socialism. Outside it looks massive, but inside it's empty :)
The main thing is not to join the roses :)
Have a nice day

@velimir. Trees to me are custodians and guardians of time. Those that have been through the Ages have witnessed the best and worst of humanity.

It is simply amazing that a tree, as evident in the linden, can survive more than six centuries whereas humans (who were created in God's image) can hardly complete one century of their life's span, it then means that certainly, something went wrong somewhere. As for the locals they might be inclined to deify the tree as a god.

Thanks for the follow up bro the lost one was awesome, this journey you are on is truly a learning experience. thanks for keeping us posted with these beautiful images and places

Also, there is a young branch growing from the old root. I like that as a symbol of new generations taking over. A natural way of going forward
I am also learning to be a better photographer from you..

Thanks for sharing. It's nice to know that people value trees like what you have shared. This tree has an entirely different story for kids in the country. Please check it out. Thanks!
