Mountain Monday: Mountainous Road To The Shrine

This Shrine to Saint Francis of Assisi is tucked away off a gravel road that winds through the mountainous hills of New Brunswick.

It is located near the village where I spent my childhood and went to high school.

The Shrine is now open once a year on the second Sunday in August. People come from all over Canada and the U.S.A. to attend. They bring their pets as St. Francis is the Patron Saint of the Environment and Animals.

Many local people take part in the annual prigrimage and there is a lot of high ground to travel to reach the Shrine.

This is a Shrine I visited many times during my childhood and in later years.

Fast fact: This Shrine to Saint Francis of Assisi was designated a Provincial Historic Site to commemorate the construction of a place of worship by Irish Catholic settlers of the area circa 1865. The chapel is small with wooden benches. Shamrock details adorn the interior and exterior of the building reflecting the Irish origins of its builders. The building is mainly constructed with beams hewn out of the surrounding forest.


Photos I took a few years ago when I was in New Brunswick that shows the steep incline of the road by the Shrine.

It was the autumn and the leaves of the trees were changing into marvellous colors of red, yellow and rust.

I’ll do a more in-depth post on the Shrine at another time. In this post I wanted to show the landscape for Mountain Monday.
