RE: Film Review: Departures (2008)

What a fabulously well-written reveiw @oryans.belt. You sold the movie to me, but also, and more importantly, the idea that death should be seen, talked about and respected with ritual and loving kindness.

What he goes onto find is that the act of preparing the dead for their final place of rest is far from the shameful, macabre affair that society would paint it as, but is instead an amazingly elegant, respectful and even poetic craft that requires no small degree of patience, finesse and skill.

My partner's aunt is a mortician. We have talked openly about how honored she feels to be the one to prepare a loved-ones body after death. She does act in love and with great care to complete the transition of a body back to ashes and dust. She has often been asked to work with people of Native American Indian decent, often performing her duties on reservations. This culture honors her work as they would any other figure of importance in their culture. We have said together that the way a culture treats death and their dead is a reflection on the health of that society.

He carries out his routine in the same way that a musician would play a classical piece, with great discipline, concentration and elegance, moving through his routine with a mesmerizing rhythmic grace.

This is a stunningly written metaphor. I will look for more movie recommendations from you, as anyone who can write this beautifully certainly has good taste in film 🌱
