War of the Worlds
The 1953 version.
This is one film that doesn't rely on CGI, there wasn't any in the 1950's and yet manages to be better than a lot of sci-fi movies made. Even the remake with all of its advantages didn't quite seem as good. The martians and their machines are very well built with a lot of detail. If you haven't seen this version, you should.
A brief recap of the story, it was first a classic novel written by H.G. Wells in which a meteor lands just outside of town. The townsfolk initial excitement turns to fear when the travellers prove to be unfriendly.
Now the battle is on to save humanity and the planet, the aliens have the technology, no weapon thrown at them has an impact. Nothing seems to be able to stop them. Is history about to repeat itself but with a difference? Instead of one country invading another and then settling it. It this about to be done to us? Are we the primitive tribe about to be wiped out?
Never saw this one Jeff. Maybe I should. Have seen the Tom Cruise version a couple of times though. A good movie - but certainly not in my top 20.

The original is a very good movie, the version with Tom Cruise had better effects but I still like the way the story was told in the original.
