Movies & More on Hot Summer Evenings in Athens!

One of the things I love about Athens in the summer . . . are the city’s many open-air movie theaters. Nowadays there are about 90 outdoor cinemas in and around town that offer neighborhood audiences and visitors alike a unique experience that taps into nostalgia yet embraces a truly contemporary Athenian lifestyle!

Although these outdoor cinemas can be very different in character, they all have big screens that are normally set up on large rooftops, terraces, enclosed courtyards or jasmine-scented gardens. They all show films in their original language with Greek subtitles (never dubbed) and they all serve snacks, drinks . . . and some much more!

The films shown are rarely new blockbuster releases, instead they are often reruns of magical all-time classics that hypnotize the viewer . . . . while enjoying old fashioned popcorn, chilled beer or a whiskey on the rocks and perhaps a hot dog . . . . and always under the starry sky!

One of my favorite Athenian outdoor cinemas is located on the rooftop of the Havana winter hall cinema in Halandri. This cinema shows a mixture of new and older films. Here there are really no frills but you will find lots of locals enjoying a good movie on hot summer evenings while sipping chilled drinks and munching on popcorn, chips and sometimes . . . . one of the best hot-dogs in town!

If visiting Athens in the summer . . . . make sure to visit one of the city's many outdoor movie theaters! I'm sure you will love it . . . as much as the Athenians do!
