Movie review: Lords of Chaos
Lords of Chaos is the 2018 film based on the story of the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem in the late 80s. It comes out at theaters next month, I caught it yesterday at local film festival.
It begins when teenage Euronymous (played by Rory Culkin) decides to start a black metal band in Oslo. His idols were the early 80's proto black black metal band from the UK called Venom. The band focuses on cultivating an evil image, pretending to be Satanists and drinking heavily. Early on they recruit a front man from Sweden known by the handle of "Dead".
The Real Dead and Euronymous
Dead has some problems, like self harm, animal abusing, and suicidal desires. Things don't go so well for dead, this is all public record it's got a Wikipedia page, but I'm not a spoiler kind on guy. Suffice to say Euronymous doesn't try to help his friend, instead deciding it's good for the band's image to have someone who self mutilates on stage. Euronymous is kind of a dick, and the movie doesn't gloss it over.
As the story moves on the band meets a young poseur fan named Christian, who want's people to call him Varg. Varg gets recruited into Mayhem and introduces the band to his favorite pastime, burning down those cute little wooden Scandinavian Churches. Varg is also kind of a dick as well as a Nazi. He says the church burnings are a nod to paganism/Odin rather than Satanic. Varg sends out a muddled message, at best.

There are hate crimes, severed pig heads, brutal stabbings, suicide, and more, it's not for the easily offended. Most everyone in it is a jerk, but it sounds like they were jerks in real life too. It's based on a book I haven't read . Overall a good flick 8/10.
I read the book and thought it was pretty good. I was a new fan of black metal when it came out and read the book to find out more about the genre and what was going on in the scene at the time.
