Many people often see paintings on walls on the streets or on sidewalks. Even some of them also often see paintings on the walls of houses or buildings that are not used or inhabited.

The picture or painting that you see in some of the places mentioned above is a mural. It's just that most people consider it a picture or a painting. Then, what exactly is the meaning of mural or mural definition?

Definition of Mural

What is Mural? What exactly is meant by a mural? Mural is a word that is quite foreign to hear for some people, especially ordinary people.

But actually most of these people actually have seen firsthand what the mural can even be often.

The definition of mural according to language is that the mural originates from the Latin language from the word "Murus" which means wall. Broadly speaking, the definition of a mural is drawing or painting on wall media, walls or other broad media that is permanent.

Well, from the definition of mural or the meaning of the mural above, it is enough to enlighten us about what is actually a mural? So, any painting or drawing made on permanent media such as floors, tables, ceilings is also included in the mural.

Mural art has actually been around since time immemorial. Even if judging from the history of murals, murals have existed since 31,500 years ago precisely in prehistoric times.

At that time there was a painting depicting a cave in Lascaux, which is the South of France. Murals made in prehistoric times use juice as a watercolor (because in prehistoric times there was no paint).

In prehistoric times, the country that had the most wall paintings or murals was none other than France. One of the most famous murals or frescoes at the time was a mural by Pablo Picasso.

Pablo Picasso made a mural called Guernica or Guernica y Luno. This mural was created at the time of the civil war in Spain in 1937.

The purpose of this mural was to commemorate the bombing by the German army in a small village where most of them were Spanish.

Many of us are still confused about the difference between murals and graffiti. When viewed in the media, murals and graffiti are usually often made on wall media.

Especially on the streets, maybe many of you see wall paintings with various characters or other forms of writing.

Then, what is the difference from murals and graffiti?

Before we compare murals and graffiti, it would be better if we both know what meaning or understanding rather than Graffiti.

Graffiti (also spelled graffity or graffiti) is graffiti on walls that use the composition of colors, lines, shapes, and volumes to write certain words, symbols, or sentences.

The tools used today are usually spray paint cans. Before spray paint was available, graffiti was generally made with paint strokes using a brush or chalk.

So, the difference between murals with graffiti is if the mural images are made more free and broad, while for graffiti in the form of writing or words. And usually for today graffiti is more often made using spray paint.

No wonder so many cafes, restaurants, hotels, apartments to homes now use wall paintings or murals as a Point of View of a room.

The mural is an attraction for visitors to come to a cafe or restaurant. The mural is made according to taste, the concept of the cafe / restaurant itself becomes an indirect media branding.
