MHKmusic update Jan. 9 – Jan. 15

We had TOO MUCH fun this week, and of course by “too much” I mean exactly the right amount of fun!!

Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy took over Auntie Mae’s on Thursday and the highly talented and high energy punk/bluegrass/dixieland band lived up to its reputation with electric banjo solos, dueling horns (trumpet/trombone) and plenty more. If you missed it you will have another shot in Wamego on January 21st, but I wouldn’t recommend missing it a second time!

Carrie Nation & the Speakeasy at Auntie Mae’s Parlor 1/5/2017

The Overies-eez released their second full length album “Moon Birth” at Love Garden Sounds in Lawrence, everyone I talk to raves about this band so I think a venue in town needs to step up and invite them to play soon!

Due to car trouble there was a lineup change at the Church of SWOLE show, but when the dust settled we had four acts instead of the original three. Headlight Rivals opened as per usual. Philosophy of Lions took the stage next and played a higher energy set than their previous shows. The Naked Fingers played a great set and were apparently pretty fired up because a guitar got thrown around a couple times (not destroyed….just thrown). Lum the Dapper Yung Lad had the crowd bumping as he returned to the MHKmusic scene with all new material. Keep an eye out because I’ll be trying to get him to town more often in the future.

There is plenty more music this week including Open Mic night at the VFW, a winning combo of music and wine at Liquid Art and a house show at Our HOUSE. If you are willing to travel then it would be worth seeing Manhattan regular Fret Highway with Normal Reaction at The Hideaway in Salina. Details below:

Wednesday 1/11:

@9:00pm Open mic at VFW Post 1786
Musicians, comedians and poets will have a chance to perfect their craft in front of a live audience. You don’t need to be a Veteran of Foreign Wars to participate or watch. All are welcome. A great way to support your local artists and to enjoy free entertainment!

Friday 1/13:

@5:30pm Live Music – Winter Series at Liquid Art Winery and Estate
Solo acoustic guitarist Mike Greim will play a mix of Country and Rock music while you enjoy Liquid Art’s wine and hard cider. Local Food Truck, Tasty Traveler will also be on site. Entertainment is free, buying drinks is encouraged! The tasting room is open from noon to 8:00pm.

@7:00pm Normal Reaction & Fret Highway at The Hideaway (Salina)
Normal Reaction is a Salina based Northern Blues trio. Fret Highway is a folk/alternative rock/folk rock singer-songwriter Amos Garren accompanied by cellist Eric Anthony Lorson. Always worth seeing!
