New Zealand Music Month - The Classics

in #music6 years ago

Today we will take a trip down memory lane and explore some classics from the New Zealand music scene as part of my focus on New Zealand music month. For me what makes these artists classics is that they have stood the test of time and are still relevant (and some still active), after many years on the music scene.

Split Enz

In terms of classic, Split Enz are one of the most well known and successful bands from New Zealand. Split Enz were a rock band formed in 1973 by musicians Tim Finn and Phil Judd. Their music has a distinct flavor of rock, pop and blues and became very influential to music in New Zealand. Here is the groovy tune ‘My Mistake’:

Split Enz Have recorded 9 studio albums over a 10 year period, and spawned many successful singles, and songs that have become classics and staples on many a playlist in New Zealand. One of their great singalongs is ‘History Never Repeats’:

Crowded House

Although Crowded House was formed in Australia, almost all New Zealanders claim them as their own - Tim Finn (from Split Enz joined the band), while his brother Neil Finn was the lead singer. Crowded House are one of New Zealand's most successful bands on the international music scene - gaining success in AUstralia, The United States and The UK. Here is the catch tune ‘Better be home soon’:

Crowded House have been around for over 30 years in the New Zealand music scene and have evolved and covered a wide style of rock music. The appeal of Crowded House for me was the laid back acoustic singalongs. Probably their most successful song is ‘Weather With You’, something I have found myself singing along to at full volume many times

The Exponents

The Exponents (originally named The Dance Exponents) were formed in 1981 by lead singer and songwriter Jordan Luck. Their most recognisable tune is the catchy tune ’Why Does Love do This to Me’:

The band has gone through many lineup changes over the years, and still performs throughout New Zealand under the name The Jordan Luck Band. Their last studio album was released in 2013.Another one of their classics is ‘Whatever happened to Tracy’ - clothes fashion has certainly come a long way since then!

Dragon

Dragon was a popular rock band in New Zealand in the 70s and 80, known for offering a new progressive Rock sound. The band was also notorious for their lifestyle and heavy use of Heroin with many members dying of drug related causes. Their most well known tune is the singalong tune ‘Take Me to the April Sun in Cuba’:

I hope you enjoyed these classics!
