This Day in Music History: Jun 18 - "The LP"
1948: 70 years ago today, Columbia records begins mass production of the "Microgroove" 33-1/3 rpm LP ("long player") record album. The decision was partly inspired by the desire to fit an entire classical movement on one side of a recording medium. The original master LPs were live-to-lacquer, and Columbia used a blue label for classical recordings, red for pop, and green for musical theater. The very first Columbia release was catalog number ML4001, Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor (Nathan Milstein: Violin; Bruno Walter: Conductor; Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of New York; Recording: May 16, 1945, Carnegie Hall, New York City).
