Frodus - The Earth Isn't Humming

Frodus was a post-hardcore band

formed in 1993 in Washington, D.C. by guitarist and singer Shelby Cinca and drummer Jason Hamacher. They were part of a large scene coming from the D.C. area that emerged from the ashes of the hardcore punk scene of the early '80s, and slowly expanded throughout the decade, into the '90s. Along with bands like Faraquet and Fugazi (all F name bands, haha, not intentional, I promise), they influenced a lot of the bands during the early 2000's hardcore revival that occurred. They combined dark, interesting harmonies, odd meters and various "mathrock" aesthetics with esoteric lyrics and subjects to create a really unique sound.

Listen to The Earth is Humming by Frodus here.

This track first appeared on their 2001

album, And We Washed Our Weapons in the Sea. I love grimey, slow tempo here, and the bass riff that keeps the whole song together. The guitar is sort of just a background element, while the bass line is what really moves the song along. The song has an interesting groove, as it's in 6/4 but we feel the groups of 2's, so instead of feeling waltzy, it drives along like a song in 4/4 would. Simple, but effective choice that definitely makes the song more unique.

Enjoy today's song! Thanks for reading!

very powerful, loved the driving bass you have discussed, it has a growl sound that's power filled.
