Jamaica - Rum, Rudeboys, Rastas, Reggae

I. Old School Ska

Ah Jamaica, so small (about 3% of the land mass of Germany) and yet so great!
So much great music has come and keeps coming from The Treasure Isle.
The great Bob Marley hails from there, but also countless other wonderful artists, some of them we will discover in this series about Jamaican music.

Traditional Jamaican Ska came about in the early 1960s.
Originally a blend of traditional Caribbean sounds, like Mento and Calypso, and American R&B and Soul, it was made for dancing.
When Jamaica gained independence from Great Britain in 1962, Ska was the music to celebrate with.

From the documentary This is Ska, here comes Jamaica Ska with some cool dance moves as well.

Would you have known that Bob Marley, before he became the most famous name in Reggae, was a clean-shaven, sharp-dressing Ska singer with The Wailers?
Together with the two other Wailers, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, great artists in their own right, Bob brings you One Love in its original 1965 Ska version.

The Wailers, Jamaican juggernauts, the band which excelled at all three Jamaican music genres, Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae.

I'm an old Peter Tosh fan from way back! :) Lovely post and made me SMILE. My ex was born on the beach on Kingston and used to kick a football around with Ziggy, back in the day. And the really old, original style reggae still makes my heart sing. :)

Me too... the heart sing bit!! I'm a big fan of rocksteady.
