I'm starting a new music series. Instead of songs in my head upon waking, I just want to share some of my favorite songs.
These are songs that are more in the psychedelic, spacey, stoner sort of variety. Let's cut the shit: songs that I like to listen to when I'm smoking the reefer.
Headphones and/or extreme volume is always recommended.
TODAY'S ENTRY:
The Mars Volta - L'Via L'Viaquez
This is one of my favorite songs by The Mars Volta. If you don't know them, they're a sort of modern-day prog band born from the ashes of At The Drive-In, a more post-hardcore / rock band from the 90s and very early 00s.
This song is great because it really takes you on a journey. It starts off as an upbeat funky, rhythmic prog song. The first two guitar solos in the song are performed by John Frusciante, formerly of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This part of the song is sung in Spanish.
The middle of the song is a more laidback, jazzy, latin-influenced section not unlike Santana, then right back into the first part of the song again.
The musicianship is superb. The drums are performed by Jon Theodore, who is one of my favorite drummers. He now plays in Queens of the Stone Age.

That's an interesting song with unexpected twists. For some reason, I was expecting Pick Floyd or Bob Marley at the top of your refeer play list though. I guess it's too cliche?

I usually just listen to hip hop so this was a nice change. I actually enjoy spacey songs like this so looking forward to more :)
